Over the years, DigiLocker has achieved several milestones in its journey towards providing citizens with a secure and easy-to-use platform for storing and sharing their digital documents. With a steady increase in user adoption, DigiLocker has now reached a remarkable milestone of 15 crore registered users by 2023 with over 150,000 daily user signups. The platform is being used in various sectors such as education, transport, and health, to store and share academic records, driving licences, vehicle registration certificates, and health-related documents. It is worth noting that 90% of DigiLocker’s users are from the age group of 18 to 40, highlighting its popularity among the younger generation.
More than 15 crore people have signed up for DigiLocker, and the platform has access to more than 5.6 billion digital documents. With over 200 types of digital documents, DigiLocker has more than 2,311 Issuers, including various government departments, academic institutions, and other organizations. DigiLocker also has over 166 registered requesters, including various service providers such as banks, insurance companies, and other government agencies.
DigiLocker’s Partnerships and Use Cases:
DigiLocker has been instrumental in digitizing various government services and has partnered with several industries, making it easier for citizens to access and share their documents seamlessly. Here are some of DigiLocker’s notable partnerships and popular use cases:
Transport: DigiLocker is being used in the transport sector to share driving licenses, vehicle registration certificates, and other transport related documents. The platform has been integrated with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) and various state transport departments, enabling citizens to access and share their documents seamlessly. It has also been used by airlines, airports, and railways for ID checks.
Insurance: The insurance industry has shown great interest in DigiLocker, with 27 companies and 430 million policies already onboarded. Eleven companies, including seven life insurance and four non-life insurance companies, are also set to arrive soon.
Financial Companies: Over 100 financial companies, including banks, NBFCs, insurance, e-commerce, digital lenders, payment companies, and fintechs, are at different stages of integration with DigiLocker.
Education: DigiLocker has over 450 million educational awards and certificates from 23 centers and state boards on a single platform. It has been integrated with the National Academic Depository (NAD) and the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC), making it easier for students to access and transfer their academic records. DigiLocker is now designated as the sole NAD by the Ministry of Education, and all centers, states, and public and private educational institutions are to integrate with the DigiLocker NAD.
Health: DigiLocker is integrated with the Health Stack, providing Health ID and Health Locker services to store and share health-related documents, such as medical certificates and vaccination records.
DigiLocker’s Ongoing Journey:
DigiLocker’s journey does not stop here, and it has several ongoing projects to further empower citizens. Some of its current projects include implementing the nominee facility and providing the “MeriPehchaan” service to provide a National Single Sign-On (SSO) service to users and service providers. A Health Locker service has also been implemented, and a Family Locker is under design and development. Additionally, DigiLocker is developing an “Organization Locker” facility and an Address Update Service. In the recent Union Budget 2023 speech, the Hon’ble Finance Minister announced that “An Entity DigiLocker will be set up for MSMEs, large businesses, and charitable trusts. This will be towards storing and sharing documents online securely, whenever needed, with various authorities, regulators, banks, and businesses.
